How to Let Go of Your Story and Create the Life of Your Dreams
“All I have are the choices I make, and I choose her, come what may.” — David Norris
In the Science Fiction film, The Adjustment Bureau, Matt Damon plays Congressman David Norris who falls in love with a beautiful contemporary ballet dancer, Elise Sellas.
However, just as he begins to visualize a future with her, he soon learns about a hidden society of “angels” (known as “the Adjustment Bureau”) who ensure every person’s life goes according to “the plan.”
According to David’s plan, he is not supposed to be with Elise. Instead, he’s meant to become a senate, and eventually, the President of the United States.
To stay with Elise would not only kill his predetermined future, but also hers. However, he’s not interested in what his “plan” or “fate” dictates. Instead, he’s interested in what he want’s in his heart.
Consequently, he’s willing to venture into the unknown and face the consequences. Or as Novelist Kashuo Ishiguro would put it,
“There was another life that I might have had, but I am having this one.”
