Committing yourself to mastering one skill or topic is definitely something that I think gets overlooked. It’s funny because I was actually writing a piece on this very point earlier today. And you mentioned “Mastery” by Robert Greene, I’m looking at the book on my shelf right now but have yet to read it. That’s a must now, thanks for the reminder :)

Biggest thing I would have done differently with my self education is start earlier. Wish I hadn't bought into the lie of formal education. But it is what is.
